The Friday everything almost worked

In Jinx City, the pedestrian light turns red just for you. The rain starts the second you trust the weather. And somewhere between the tram stop and the bakery, an ordinary man was having a very ordinary catastrophe.

It was Friday the thirteenth. His toast had landed butter-side down. One umbrella had opened indoors; the spare wouldn't open at all. A black cat had delayed him at the crossing. Then, as he ran for the 11:59 tram, his bag caught on a bench.

The bench was holding up Rita's broken repair kiosk. When it moved, the counter tilted and a hundred tiny screws rolled toward the tracks. He dropped his bag and caught the counter. The tram left. Rita found a crate. The cat sat on it and declined to help.

They saved the kiosk. One drawer still fell out, hit his forehead, and supplied his first bandage. “Bad luck,” he said. Rita looked at the counter. “For the tram. Good timing for me.”

Then a gust tore the kiosk's orange awning loose. It wrapped around his shoulders. Rita laughed. “Look at you. A superhero.” By evening, she had turned the fabric into a cape and mask. The clover patch she found had only three leaves, so she cut a fourth from a paper receipt and taped it on. “There. Custom.”

That was the discovery. He couldn't make good luck happen. He could make bad luck less lonely.

He went home wearing the outfit beneath his jacket. The zipper stuck. The cape caught in the door. The transformation was complete: Jinx City had a new hero, and he was late for his own origin story.

Now the Unlucky Club meets wherever plans fall apart. Rita fixes what she can. Lucky the cat keeps excellent time for meals. And Pechman keeps showing up, one second late for something and, occasionally, just in time for someone.

The universe never gave him a break.
So he gave everyone else a reason to laugh.
